OTHER BUSINESS

4. Durham/York Joint Waste Management Environmental Assessment Update

The Committee was advised that public meetings were held (or will be held) on site selection criteria on September 12, 13 and 14, 2006 in Durham and York Regions regarding the siting of a new thermal treatment facility for a long-term solution to manage residual garbage. A report will be prepared for the February or March Committee meeting with a short list of suggested sites.

5. Michigan Border Closure in 2010

The Committee was advised that the Region has alternate solutions for disposing of waste including the implementation of the Dongara contract and the green bin program which should be in effect in 2008. The Michigan border is expected to be closed for municipal waste generated in Ontario by 2010.

6. Liquor Control Board Bottle Return

The Committee was informed of the announcement by the Minister of the Environment relating to bottle returns.  The Region's total diversion rate will be slightly impacted as will revenue received through WDO. The decreased revenue is offset by reduced operating costs and the LCBO stewardship is encouraged.

7. October Committee Meeting Cancelled

The Committee recommends that the next meeting scheduled for October 11, 2006 be cancelled and any staff reports be referred directly to Council on October 19, 2006.

The Solid Waste Management Committee adjourned at 11:04 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,

September 13, 2006                                                                                       M. Ferri
