The Solid Waste Management Committee began its meeting at 9:14 a.m. on January 12, 2005.

The Solid Waste Management Committee advises Council of the following matters having been considered by the Solid Waste Management Committee with the following action:

 

ELECTION OF CHAIR AND VICE CHAIR

 

1. Regional Councillor Wheeler was elected Chair and Regional Councillor Ferri was elected Vice Chair of the Solid Waste Management Committee for 2005.

 

DEPUTATIONS

 

2. Rod Muir, Founder, Waste Diversion Toronto/Canada and Waste Diversion Campaigner, Sierra Club of Canada, January 3, 2005, made a deputation regarding a public relations, news conference/photo opportunity in support of reduced packaging.

The Committee received the communication and deputation.

 

3. Gord Landon and Geoffrey McOuat, Creative Director, Partnership Marketing Group, December 2, 2004, made a deputation regarding Marketing of the Three-Stream System.

The Committee received the deputation. Staff was directed to prepare a report to the February 9, 2005 meeting of the Solid Waste Management Committee dealing with the issues discussed. Given the time constraints, the report should also contain provisions for an invitational RFP.

 

 

COMMUNICATION

4. Regional Councillor Jack Heath, Town of Markham, dated December 24, 2004, regarding an information session on Mission Green - Phase One, to be held January 21, 2005. Received.

 

 

OTHER BUSINESS

 

5. Staff advised the Committee of a letter received from the State of Michigan stating that certain provisions of By-law No. A-0351-2004-084, regarding the regulation of transfer stations used for municipal solid waste by York Region, were not acceptable to Michigan.

 

The Committee directed staff to review the correspondence to determine an appropriate response and report directly to Council if there is a need to do so.

 

 

The Solid Waste Management Committee adjourned at 10:22 a.m.
