HSPB - YR Update
1. Memorandum to the Members of Community and Health Services Committee from Adelina Urbanski, Commissioner of Community and Health Services, dated September 12, 2012 regarding 'Human Services Planning Board of York Region Update'. Received.
2. Clause 2 of Report 5 of the Community and Health Services Committee, dated April 24, 2012 entitled 'Human Services Planning Board of York Region - Year in Review 2011'. Received.
3. HSPB-YR Communication Team Update. Received.
Staff was directed to continue exploring the concept of a challenge to advance the Making Ends Meet Community Results and corresponding indicator areas as well as to recruit a hospital communication professional and a York Region Media Group member to join the Communication Team.
DISCUSSION TOPICS
4. HSPB - YR members discussed Making Ends Meet Progress Reporting � Collective Actions which include:
Convening Public Education and Awareness Meeting House Series:
United Way has facilitated a series of community dialogues on social infrastructure in five York Region municipalities. The feedback gathered will be used to inform social infrastructure improvement recommendations in York Region. United Way will be hosting a press conference on October 15, 2012, and HSPB-YR Co-chairs were invited to attend.
Fair Access:
A pilot project is being developed to explore partnership opportunities between York Region, school boards and local municipalities to increase access to recreational programs for low and moderate income neighbourhood children and youth. The pilot project is a community building partnership based on the Board's Making Ends Meet initiative.
Affordable Housing Symposium:
The Human Services Planning Board hosted a symposium entitled "Turning Talk to Action: Creating Housing Options for All" in June 2012.
The Board received the updates and directed staff to proceed with advocacy focus of encouraging affordable private market rental housing options and proceedings which include:
1. hosting a future housing symposium and/or series of focused discussions with specific sectors, such as the building industry or local municipalities, on the creation of rental housing, including secondary suites;
2. facilitating exploratory discussions with the building industry on models for developing affordable rental housing units in
3. organizing a community challenge that solicits innovative affordable housing ideas.

The Human Services Planning Board is hosting a community Results Based Accountability Model workshop on November 1, 2012, from 8:30 - 4:30.
Next meeting of the Human Services Planning Board is scheduled for December 4, 2012 at 3:30 p.m.
