The Accessibility Advisory Committee began its meeting at 4:02 p.m. on June 23, 2010.
1 UPDATE - COMMITTEE PROCEEDINGS
The Accessibility Advisory Committee advises the Community and Health Services Committee of the following matters having been considered by the Accessibility Advisory Committee with the following action:
PRESENTATION
1. Morris Faccin, Manager, Emergency Management, Office of the Chief Administrative Officer, regarding 'People with Disabilities and Emergency Management in York Region' Received.
2. Lisa Gonsalves, Manager, Program Development and Delivery, Community and Health Services Department, regarding 'Charting a Path Forward: Report of the Independent Review of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA) and the AODA' Received report and supported the recommendations.
The Committee requested that staff draft a response on behalf of the Accessibility Advisory Committee, to be forwarded to Mr. Charles Beer, the local Accessibility Advisory Committees, the Province and AMO, in support of the report and providing the Committee's recommendations regarding repeal of the ODA in the Spring of 2011 including a timetable, harmonization of the AODA standards, funding, and designation of a Minister Responsible for Accessibility.
3. Lois Davies, Program Manager, ODA/AODA, Community and Health Services Department, regarding 'Accessing York: York Region's 2010 Accessibility Plan' Received.
The Committee directed staff to ensure that the architectural plans for the proposed Central Services Centre be presented to Committee by the accessibility consultant for feedback.
COMMUNICATIONS
1. Copy of the Extract from Community and Health Services Committee Report No. 4, Clause No. 3 to Council dated May 12, 2010 regarding 'Accessing York: York Region's 2010 Accessibility Plan' Received.
2. Copy of letter from Denis Kelly, Regional Clerk to Regional Councillor Vito Spatafora, Chair, York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee dated May 21, 2010 regarding 'Update on Compliance with the Accessibility Standards for Customer Service Regulation (429/07) under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005' Received.
3. Copy of the Extract from Transportation Services Committee Report No. 5, Clause No. 3 to Council dated May 5, 2010 regarding 'York Regional Forest Accessible Trail Initiative' Received.
OTHER BUSINESS
1. Cordelia Abankwa-Harris, Managing Director, Strategic Service Integration and Policy, Community and Health Services Department, regarding York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee Reception in the fall of 2010 Received.
Staff advised that:
Council will be considering the proposed revised Terms of Reference on June 24, 2010.
Concurrent with this term of Council, some members of this Committee will reach their tenure.
A reception in honour of the Accessibility Advisory Committee members has been proposed for the Fall of 2010. Formal invitations will be sent after confirmation of the event has been granted.
The November Committee meeting is scheduled to take place on November 24, 2010.
2. Lois Davies, Program Manager, ODA/AODA, Community and Health Services Department, regarding Update on National Access Awareness Week - June 6, 2010 to June 12, 2010 Received.
3. Wilf Morley, York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee Member, reporting back on the "AAC Breakfast Meeting" held May 12, 2010 Received.
4. Margaret Gaukel, York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee Member, reporting back on the York Regional Police's "Community Support and Victims' Assistance" Roundtable Session held on May 31, 2010 Received.
The Committee requested that a letter of thanks be sent to the Police Services Board, encouraging them to continue to move forward regarding the development of accessible services.

5. Margaret Gaukel, York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee Member, reporting back on the "PRESTO Accessibility Focus Session" held on June 2, 2010 Received.
The Committee requested that the comments regarding the challenges of using the machine, provided by Committee members involved in the focus session, be forwarded to Metrolinx and the Transportation Services Committee.
6. Copy of article from York Region Media Group, dated May 27, 2010 regarding 'New initiatives will boost accessibility in region' Received.
7. Regional Councillor Spatafora advised that on May 19, 2010 the Canadian Hearing Society's awards were presented by the Honourable David Onley, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario. Regional Councillor Spatafora accepted an award on behalf of York Region, which recognized the commitment and dedication towards accessibility issues by the members of the York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee and York Region.
8. The next meeting of the Accessibility Advisory Committee is scheduled for Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at 4:00 p.m.
The Accessibility Advisory Committee adjourned at 6:07 p.m.
