The Accessibility Advisory Committee began its meeting at 4:07 p.m. on February 24, 2010.

 

 

 

1  UPDATE - COMMITTEE PROCEEDINGS

 

The Accessibility Advisory Committee advises the Community and Health Services Committee of the following matters having been considered by the Accessibility Advisory Committee with the following action:

 

 

ELECTION OF CHAIR AND VICE CHAIR

 

1. Regional Councillor Vito Spatafora was elected Chair and Trish Robichaud was elected Vice Chair of the York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee for 2010.

 

 

DEPUTATIONS

 

1. Deputation by Tyler Barker, Resident, Town of Aurora regarding York Region Transit Mobility Plus.  Received. 

 

2. Deputation by Ana Khorramshahi, Resident, Town of Richmond Hill, speaking in support of Tyler Barker.  Received.

 

3. Deputation by the Most Reverend Dorian Baxter, Archbishop of the Federation of Independent Anglican Churches of North America, regarding York Region Transit Mobility Plus.  Received.

 

The Committee recommended that staff's report to the Transportation Services Committee detailing the upcoming consultative review of the Mobility Plus service also include details addressing the process, timelines, communication plan, format, etc., and that this report be shared with the YRAAC for their information and to allow their input into the process.

 

It was further recommended that the three deputants in attendance today be advised of the Committee date when this report and process are scheduled for review.

PRESENTATION

 

1. Luis Carvalho, Project Manager, Environmental Services Department regarding "Richmond Hill Community Environmental Centre".  Received.

 

The Committee recommended that staff from the Environmental Services Department give consideration to a drive-through drop-off service for people with disabilities, or that appropriate signage and intercom systems be installed to allow people with disabilities to avail themselves of staff assistance, and that staff at the Community Environmental Centre receive the appropriate accessible training.

1. Madeleine Meilleur, Minister of Community and Social Services, regarding "Progress Update on Accessibility Standards".  Received.

 

2. Margaret Gaukel, Vice-Chair, YRAAC - Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act Subcommittee, regarding "Draft Accessibility Report on the Accessibility Standards for Customer Service, Ontario Regulation (429/07) Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005".  Received with thanks to the staff of the Community & Health Services Department for their work on this comprehensive report.

 

3. Mafalda Avellino, Executive Director, Regional Municipality of York Police Services Board, dated January 29, 2010, forwarding a report from the Chief of Police entitled "Update on the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005".  Received.

 

 

OTHER BUSINESS

 

1. Donna Hardaker, Citizen Member, York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee, regarding an update on the "York Region Emergency Management Focus Groups held January 26th and February 23rd, 2010".  Received.

 

2. Kim Adeney, Senior Program and Compliance Analyst, ODA/AODA, Community and Health Services Department, regarding update on the "Independent Review of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005, by Charles Beer and the York Region Session December 21, 2009".  Deferred to the April 21, 2010 YRAAC meeting.

 

3. Kim Adeney, Senior Program and Compliance Analyst, ODA/AODA, Community and Health Services Department, regarding update on "National Access Awareness Week - June 6 to 13, 2010".  Received with direction that the Chair of the YRAAC correspond with Regional Council to request that June 6 to 13, 2010 be recognized as National Access Awareness Week.

 

4. Lois Davies, Program Manager, ODA/AODA, Community and Health Services, regarding update on the "Development of the York Region 2010 Accessibility Plan".  Deferred to the April 21, 2010 YRAAC meeting.

 

5. Lisa Gonsalves, Manager, Program Development and Delivery, Community and Health Services Department, regarding update on the "Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005".  Deferred to the April 21, 2010 YRAAC meeting.

 

6. Irene McNeil, Director, Strategic Policy and Business Planning, Transportation Services Department, circulated and provided an overview of Clause 2 of Report No. 1 of the Transportation Services Committee regarding 'Update on Fare Subsidy Requests'.  The Committee requested that they be kept informed of future reports and developments concerning this issue.

 

7. The next meeting of the Accessibility Advisory Committee is scheduled for Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at 4:00 p.m.

 

 

The Accessibility Advisory Committee adjourned at 6:06 p.m.
