YorkSafe inspection information coming soon to a pool, salon or tattoo parlour near you

Expansion of YorkSafe program increases public awareness and safety
NEWMARKET - York Regional Council today approved the expansion of the YorkSafe inspection and disclosure program to include safe water and personal services settings. York Region will become the first health unit in Ontario to request posting of inspection signs at locations such as swimming pools, hair salons and tattoo parlours to enhance public awareness and safety.

“The Regional Municipality of York is going above and beyond provincial regulations to communicate even more public health inspection information to residents,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Bill Fisch. “Access to more information allows residents to make informed choices about where to take their business in our Region.”

Safe water and personal services settings include small drinking water systems, swimming pools and splash pads, hair and aesthetic salons, tattoo and piercing studios and acupuncture clinics. The YorkSafe expansion will request posting of Proof of Public Health Inspection signs onsite, as well as provide inspection results through the YorkSafe web page at www.york.ca/yorksafe and York Region’s Health Connection telephone information line at 1-800-361-5653, TTY 1-866-252-9933.

“York Region is home to many excellent establishments which stand to benefit from the YorkSafe expansion,” said Town of Markham Deputy Mayor Jack Heath, Chair of the Region’s Community and Health Services Committee. “York Region water and personal services operators will have the opportunity to provide a higher level of information and customer service, which residents will appreciate.”

The expansion of YorkSafe to include safe water and personal services settings will be phased in over the next 12 to 18 months to allow time for consultations and technology upgrades. Consultations will help gather feedback on the program expansion.

York Region Public Health launched the YorkSafe initiative in 2011 to increase access to food establishment inspection results. Participating food premises in York Region post onsite Proof of Public Health Inspection signs and reports are available online for a two-year period.
