York Region celebrates EMS Week, May 20 to 26

Week-long activities recognize EMS paramedics and raise public awareness of health and safety
NEWMARKET – The Regional Municipality of York celebrates National Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week, May 20 to 26. This year’s theme, EMS – More than a job. A calling recognizes the life-saving work of EMS paramedics and staff.
A series of activities will be held throughout the week to raise awareness of safety measures, injury prevention and how to respond in a medical emergency.
York Region EMS will host and participate in the following community outreach events and activities:
• Tuesday, May 22: In partnership with Blue Door Shelters, paramedics are preparing and serving lunch, donated by Vince’s Country Market, to clients at Porter Place Men’s Shelter and Leeder Place Family Shelter. Blue Door Shelters is a non-profit agency that provides emergency shelter for people who are homeless in York Region. Blue Door Shelters operates three shelters in York Region: Leeder Place Family Shelter, Porter Place Men’s Shelter and York Region Youth Shelter.
• Wednesday, May 23: In partnership with Blue Door Shelters’ York Region Youth Shelter, paramedics are hosting a basketball challenge for clients at the York Region Youth Shelter. A pizza lunch will be served following the challenge.
• Thursday, May 24: Members of the media are encouraged to try their hand at a number of paramedic skills at Media Invitation Day. Skills will include Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), airway management, spinal motion restriction and splinting.
• Saturday, May 26: In partnership with the Environmental Services Department and the Transportation and Community Planning Department, York Region EMS paramedics and staff will host a Family Fun Day between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. at 80 and 90 Bales Drive East, in the Town of East Gwillimbury. York Region residents are invited to attend the event which includes a car seat clinic and a free CPR class.
York Region’s team of 410 paramedics provide emergency medical response to York Region residents and visitors 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. In 2011, York Region paramedics responded to over 73,000 calls for assistance – an average of one call every seven minutes of every hour of every day.
