YRT/Viva Bus Roadeo showcases safe driving skills

Bus operators to compete in 5th annual skills competition to become Bus Roadeo Champion
NEWMARKET - The Regional Municipality of York is hosting the 5th Annual YRT/Viva Bus Roadeo on Sunday, June 10, highlighting the skills of our highly-trained bus operators. YRT/Viva operators will compete in a series of driving challenges to win the Bus Roadeo Champion title and the opportunity to represent York Region at the 2013 American Public Transit Association (APTA) Bus Roadeo in Indianapolis, Indiana.
 
Members of the media are invited to attend. Please note, this event is not open to the general public.
 
WHEN:   Sunday, June 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
 
WHERE: Richmond Green Sports Centre
               1300 Elgin Mills Road East (Leslie Street and Elgin Mills Road), Town of Richmond Hill
 
WHAT:    Opening Ceremony, Bus Roadeo and family activities
 
• 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. - Opening ceremony remarks, singing of O’Canada
• 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. - Bus Roadeo, YRT/Viva staff barbecue and Family Fun Zone activities
• 1:30 p.m to 2 p.m. - Bus Roadeo Competition Awards Ceremony

BACKGROUND:
YRT/Viva operators are trained professionals who bring safe, friendly and reliable transit service to York Region customers. The YRT/Viva Bus Roadeo is a fun, interactive way for operators to showcase their abilities and receive recognition for their hard work.
 
Four York Region contracted service providers employ approximately 800 operators to provide YRT/Viva service. YRT/Viva’s bus fleet is large and growing, including more than 440 YRT, Viva and Mobility Plus vehicles.
 
YRT/Viva offers local and rapid transit services throughout all nine municipalities in York Region. More than 120 routes keep residents connected within York Region, as well as with connecting services in the City of Toronto and the Region of Peel. In 2011, 19.8 million riders used YRT/Viva with an average of 80,000 boardings made each weekday.
