The Regional Municipality of York upgrades water supply to the Village of Kleinburg

Current groundwater sources receive boost from Lake Ontario
NEWMARKET – The Regional Municipality of York will upgrade the water supply to the Village of Kleinburg by converting the current groundwater (well-based) supply to a lake-based water supply from the York Water System, currently servicing the City of Vaughan.

Phase 1, occurring Wednesday, June 6 through Friday, June 8 between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., encompasses all residential, commercial and institutional properties along Islington Avenue, south of Stegman’s Mill to Sunset Ridge, and properties east and west of Islington Avenue between Stegman’s Mill and Major Mackenzie Drive West.

In addition to water supply upgrades, the method of water disinfection will move from chlorination (the addition of chlorine) to chloramination, which uses both chlorine and small amounts of ammonia. Chloramination is recognized by both the Ministry of the Environment and Health Canada as a safe disinfectant to treat water for drinking and domestic use. Fluoride will also be included in the upgraded water supply.

The Village of Kleinburg’s municipal water supply will receive the same treatment process used for the majority of York Region municipalities, processed through the same treatment facilities serving the City of Toronto and Peel Region.

Note: For drinking water systems using chloraminated water, kidney dialysis patients and owners of fish, reptiles and amphibians must monitor their water supply closer. Residents on dialysis machines should contact their physicians for more information.
The process of water system conversion will involve watermain flushing and necessary system maintenance. During the flushing and maintenance activities residents may experience tap-water discolouration. Should this occur, residents are asked to flush their water lines until the water runs clear. Should the discolouration persist, residents are advised to contact:
