York Region releases Economic Development Action Plan

Underlying goals focus on identifying and developing Innovation Network
The Regional Municipality of York has released its Economic Development Action Plan which sets out a strategic course of action for the economic growth and prosperity of York Region. Over 300 stakeholders engaged in more than 20 consultations to help shape the goals and actions included in the plan.

“Economic growth and job creation are vital to the Region’s prosperity,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Bill Fisch. “The Economic Development Action Plan continues to evaluate where the Region will be successful and the actions and partnerships that will ensure our continued success.”

The Draft Economic Action Plan was endorsed by Regional Council and shared with area municipalities and interested stakeholders for input earlier this summer.

The 2005 Economic Strategy established a strong foundation for success based on partnerships across many boundaries. This theme continues to play a role in the newly identified goals while focusing on identifying and developing creative people, companies and institutions.

The action plan identifies six major goal areas of focus:
• Develop a greater post-secondary and research presence
• Provide connections through infrastructure to support innovation
• Develop the innovation network connecting business to opportunities
• Develop a strong, common marketing message
• Develop complete communities including appropriate real estate
• Develop a viable workforce

“Two new priorities of the plan focus on attracting a major post-secondary and research presence and supporting a Regional approach to securing connectivity infrastructure or bandwidth,” said Town of Newmarket Regional Councillor John Taylor, Chair of the Region’s Planning and Economic Development Committee. “Focusing on these priorities will position York Region as a leader in the knowledge-based economy.”

An annual report on the progress made toward achieving the goals outlined in the Action Plan will be presented to Committee and Council at the beginning of each year.

The Action Plan has been circulated to area municipalities and is available on www.york.ca and www.investinyork.ca
