Directory showcases diverse nature of York Region economy
York Region business-to-business contact and employment research is now a little easier with the release of The Regional Municipality of York updated business directory and employment survey.
The 2012 York Region Business Directory is an annual electronic publication providing searchable business information for York Region residents, businesses and local municipalities.
“The importance of the business information database to local businesses and residents is two-fold,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Bill Fisch. “The Directory provides consumers with convenient access to an existing online marketplace while showcasing the diverse nature of York Region’s economy.”
The updated directory features a revamped website to allow the public to find local businesses using multiple search criteria such as company name, product and location or by keywords.
”By working collaboratively with area municipalities, the Region is able to deliver a useful business-to-business guide across the Region,” said Town of Newmarket Regional Councillor John Taylor, Chair of the Region’s Planning and Economic Development Committee. “In addition to promoting local businesses, the directory will help develop and attract businesses from a wide array of sectors.”
Results of York Region’s Employment Survey form the basis of the Business Directory and illustrate industry and employment trends in the Regional economy.
Information gathered from the Employment Survey includes:
• An estimated 527,500 jobs in York Region
• An increase of 11,700 jobs from mid-year 2011 to mid-year 2012
• Largest industry sectors by size are manufacturing, retail, professional scientific and technical services, and wholesale trade
• 75 per cent of York Region employment is full time
The survey collects information such as company name, business activity and number of employees. Businesses are asked a question regarding their hiring intentions, which is used to monitor York Region labour force activity.
The employment survey is also used to produce the Region’s 2012 Employment and Industry report, the Vacant Employment Land Inventory, Economic Strategies, Employment Forecasts and initiatives such as Innovation in Manufacturing.
