The Regional Municipality of York to develop Economic Development Action Plan

Plan will focus on developing creativity and innovation



NEWMARKET - The Regional Municipality of York will develop an Economic Development Action Plan that focuses on creating and retaining jobs in the Region and build upon the award-winning 2005 Economic Strategy.


“A strong and healthy economy will be essential to our Region as we continue to experience growth and change,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Bill Fisch. “An economic action plan will provide a framework to promote innovation, continuous learning and provide support to our businesses.”


The 2005 Economic Strategy helped develop partnerships to deliver business support programs through partnerships across our community. Some of these programs included the Business Innovation in Changing Times series for small businesses, Hospitality First online customer service training and career development tool and the Export Development and International Investment Program which connected local companies with international markets and investors.


The Economic Development Action Plan will:


The plan will be developed jointly with the Region’s Vision 2051 initiative, which will develop a blueprint to guide economic, social and community development in York Region over the next 40 years. 


“The Economic Development Action Plan will focus on developing a skilled work force and creativity which leads to innovation and positive change,” said Town of Newmarket Regional Councillor John Taylor, Chair of the Region’s Planning and Economic Development Committee. “Developing these key elements of business will help to ensure future economic success for our communities.”


Over the next 12 months, the plan will continue to be further developed in stages and is scheduled to go to York Regional Council for approval in June, 2012.
