Ontario Professional Planners Institute recognizes excellence in planning
NEWMARKET – The Regional Municipality of York will receive two Excellence in Planning Awards from the Ontario Professional Planners Institute for the new York Region Official Plan.
The first award, in the Municipal Statutory Planning Studies, Reports and Documents category, recognizes the Official Plan for its high calibre of excellence in planning. The second award, a special Healthy Communities Award that is awarded jointly with the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, recognizes the number of ways in which the York Region Official Plan will create and foster communities that are healthier and more sustainable.
"These awards recognize the commitment of York Regional Council and staff to creating sustainable communities that meet the needs of our residents long into the future," said York Region Chairman and CEO Bill Fisch. "York Region is a role model for sustainability, which is important to share with residents as we enter a new era of city building."
It is anticipated that York Region will grow by 500,000 people to reach a population of 1.5 million and add 275,000 jobs to bring employment to 780,000 jobs by 2031.
"The importance of sustainability, urban design, transit, active transportation and green infrastructure in creating healthy communities make our Regional Official Plan a progressive and effective planning tool to meet our residents' wishes," said Town of Newmarket Regional Councillor John Taylor, Chair of the Region's Planning and Economic Development Committee. "This is an achievement we can all be proud of."
The Regional Official Plan was developed through extensive consultation with York Region's residents, partners and stakeholders.
The Ontario Professional Planners Institute will present the awards to York Region at its annual conference in Ottawa in October.
