York Region paramedics recognized for providing highest standard of patient care

NEWMARKET – The Regional Municipality of York is pleased to announce seven York Region Emergency Medical Services (EMS) paramedics were recently awarded the 2011 Governor General EMS Exemplary Service Medal.
The celebration took place last week during the annual general meeting of the Association of Municipal Emergency Medical Services of Ontario (AMEMSO) held in Blue Mountain. The York Region 2011 Award Recipients for the EMS Exemplary Service Medal are: Cheryl Balsdon, Patricia Connolly, Michael Jessop, Michael O’Connor, Leo Rosswill, Charles Shaw and Douglas Williamson.
“The primary role of paramedics has greatly evolved over the past 40 years,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Bill Fisch. “This award recognizes the enhancements to the profession and commitment of our paramedics to provide the highest standard of pre-hospital care to York Region residents and visitors.”
Governor General Exemplary Service Medals are awarded to EMS professionals as part of the Canadian Honours Programme. The award was created in 1994 and is available to eligible members of the pre-hospital emergency medical service who have served for at least 20 years in a commendable manner.
“I commend the recipients of this prestigious award for their many years of hard work and dedication to serving York Region,” said Town of Markham Deputy Mayor Jack Heath, Chair of the Region’s Community and Health Services Committee. “Not only do the service medals honour the individuals, they also highlight the paramedic profession and raise awareness of the vital role of emergency responders in our community.”
This is the eighth year York Region paramedics have been honoured with this award.
York Region’s team of over 400 paramedics provide emergency medical response to York Region residents and visitors 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. They work out of 21 strategically-located paramedic response stations across the Region. The York Region EMS fleet consists of over 60 vehicles. In 2010, York Region paramedics responded to over 70,000 calls for assistance.
