York Region marks National Infection Control Week with release of spa safety guide
NEWMARKET – The Regional Municipality of York is marking National Infection Control Week, October 17 to 21, with the launch of Be Spa Safe, a comprehensive guide filled with tips to stay safe, healthy and infection-free at the spa.
Be Spa Safe enhances community knowledge about infection prevention and proper hygiene practices at personal service facilities.
Serious infections, including Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV, nail and skin fungus can spread easily at the spa if proper steps to clean and disinfect are not followed. The Be Spa Safe guide includes checklists of what to look for before receiving a manicure, pedicure, facial, waxing or hairdressing treatment.
Some spa safety tips in the guide include:
• Visit the spa before your service and ask questions about its safety practices
• Avoid getting treatment on body parts where you have a cut, open wound, rash or skin infection
• If what you see or hear makes you uneasy about the spa’s hygiene practices, don’t be afraid to refuse your treatment
National Infection Control Week is recognized annually in Canada and the United States every third week of October as an opportunity for health care professionals to highlight the importance of infection prevention and control in the community.
York Region Public Health Inspectors inspect spas, nail and hair salons and tattoo parlours to make sure they are following proper procedures that reduce the risk of infection to clients and workers during services. York Region Public Health Inspectors also respond to public complaints and educate spa owners and employees on infection prevention and control best practices.
