York Region continues to meet the needs of Ontario Works recipients despite the possible mail services disruption

York Region asks Ontario Works recipients to pick up June cheques at local offices
NEWMARKET – The Regional Municipality of York Community and Health Services department is making efforts to continue to serve residents in the event of a Canada Post strike.
York Region has taken the necessary steps to assist individuals and families who rely on Ontario Works (OW) for income and employment supports to continue to receive the best possible service during labour negotiations and potential postal disruption.
At this time, York Region’s focus is on residents who rely on the mail for their income support.  June Ontario Works cheques will not be mailed to residents; however, York Region has a plan in place to ensure that individuals and families will receive their payments and benefits in time.
Cheques that would normally be sent to clients by mail will be available for pick up at the client’s local Ontario Works office effective May 31, 2011.  Office locations are listed below and are open Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.:
o Georgina Office – 24262 Woodbine Avenue, Town of Georgina
o Newmarket Office – 62 Bayview Parkway, Town of Newmarket
o Richmond Hill Office – 50 High Tech Road, 3rd Floor, Town of Richmond Hill
o Vaughan Office – 3901 Highway 7, 5th Floor, City of Vaughan
Approximately 90 per cent of OW recipients in York Region receive their payment through direct bank deposit.
OW clients who receive monthly direct bank deposit payments will not experience a delay in payment and the monthly payment will be deposited in the client’s bank account.  However, no statements or drug cards will be mailed.  Drug cards that were valid for the month of May will continue to be valid in the event of a strike.
It is difficult to anticipate how long this service interruption will last.  For up-to-date information about Ontario Works payments, visit
If you have any questions or would like to enrol into direct bank deposit, please contact York Region’s Community and Health Services Contact Centre at 1-888-256-1112 or TTY 905-762-0401.
