York Region contest celebrates sun awareness with Grade 1 students
NEWMARKET – In celebration of Sun Awareness Week June 6 to 12, The Regional Municipality of York invites media to attend the SunSmart poster contest award presentation on Wednesday, June 8, 2011.
More than 550 Grade 1 students from 40 York Region elementary schools submitted their posters to the York Region Sun Sense Coalition contest in March.
The winner of this year’s SunSmart poster contest will be awarded a tree to plant on their school’s property. This tree will create a cooling shade for the students during outdoor activities. Using shade is an important strategy in reducing ultraviolet (UV) exposure from the sun.
