YRT/Viva recognized for excellence in ITS programs across the country
NEWMARKET – The Regional Municipality of York has won an Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Canada national award for York Region Transit (YRT)/Viva’s transit management systems.
“York Region continues to be recognized as a national and world-wide leader in the implementation of technology in public transit,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Bill Fisch. “This award is both an honour and a testament to York Region’s continued efforts to use technology to improve YRT/Viva’s customer experience.”
The ITS Project/Program Award for larger metropolitan areas recognizes York Region’s work in spearheading the implementation of intelligent transportation systems on Viva (bus rapid transit), York Region Transit (conventional transit service) and Mobility Plus (paratransit service).
The intelligent transportation systems installed on YRT/Viva vehicles thus far include computer-aided dispatch applications, automatic vehicle location and numerous traveller information services. Each system component is designed to enhance customer service, improve passenger and driver safety, optimize operational performance and provide real-time bus arrival information at stops and terminals.
“The technology on YRT/Viva vehicles helps establish operational efficiencies and improve the overall transit experience,” said Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville Mayor Wayne Emmerson, Chair of the Region’s Transportation Services Committee. “Whether riders are at home, on the move or on board a YRT/Viva bus, they can access traveller information systems from their handheld devices, helping them better plan their trips.”
Intelligent Transportation Systems Canada is a national organization that leads the promotion and advancement of intelligent transportation systems and services to benefit Canadians. The Regional Municipality of York is a sustaining corporate member of ITS Canada.
