The Regional Municipality of York initiates SM4RT LIVING waste management plan

Rethinking our approach to waste
NEWMARKET –  The Regional Municipality of York has launched SM4RT LIVING, an Integrated Waste Management Master Plan initiative that will explore ways for residents to reduce consumer waste.

The plan’s public campaign, SM4RT LIVING, offers York Region residents and business owners an opportunity to help create the master plan and encourage the community to think and act in a sustainable way.

SM4RT LIVING will establish a strategic direction for waste management within York Region for the next 25 years,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Bill Fisch.  “The waste management plan will help our residents become more aware of the amount of waste generated and how to manage their waste materials.”

The development of the Waste Management Master Plan will run until December 2012.  There are a number of ways for residents and business owners to participate and share their insight, including visiting the SM4RT LIVING booth at community events this summer, participating on the Public Advisory Committee or by submitting ideas and comments to the SM4RT LIVING website: www.SM4RTLIVING.ca

SM4RT LIVING will allow York Region to maintain its position as a waste management leader by focusing on driving waste prevention and reuse while maximizing recycling, composting, and the fourth ‘R’ - energy recovery,” said Town of Richmond Hill Regional Councillor Vito Spatafora, Chair of the Region’s Environmental Services Committee.  “The success of the project depends on everyone in York Region, including families, students and businesses owners.”
