Winner of local skills competition advances to compete in international competition
NEWMARKET – The Regional Municipality of York held the 4th Annual York Region Transit (YRT)/Viva Bus Roadeo on Sunday, highlighting the skills of our highly-trained bus operators. Placing first in a series of skills competitions is Frank Muir from contracted operator Veolia Transportation Canada Inc. As Bus Roadeo Champion, Mr. Muir will move on to represent York Region at the 2012 American Public Transit Association (APTA) International Bus Roadeo in Long Beach, California.
Two additional operators earned honours for their performance at the Bus Roadeo:
2nd Place – Miles Mitkovski, Veolia Transportation Canada Inc.
3rd Place – Ronnie Wu, Veolia Transportation Canada Inc.
YRT/Viva operators are trained professionals who bring safe, friendly and reliable transit service to York Region streets and communities. The annual Bus Roadeo provides a fun, interactive opportunity for operators to showcase their abilities and receive recognition for their hard work.
YRT/Viva service is provided by approximately 800 operators employed by four York Region contracted service providers:

• Miller Transit Ltd.
• York BRT Services LP
YRT/Viva offers local and rapid transit services throughout all nine municipalities in York Region. More than 120 routes keep residents connected within York Region, as well as with connecting services in the City of Toronto and the Region of Peel. More than 19 million riders used YRT/Viva services in 2010, with an average of 73,000 boardings made each weekday.
YRT/Viva experienced significant ridership gains in the first five months of 2011, reporting a 10.5 per cent increase when compared to the same time frame in 2010. If this trend continues, YRT/Viva will surpass 21 million riders in 2011.
