More than 60 YRT/Viva service changes on the way

Visit to view full changes effective September 4 and plan your route.

NEWMARKETThe Regional Municipality of York will introduce more than 60 YRT/Viva route and schedule changes to improve and adjust services in your community.

The changes will be in effect as of Sunday, September 4, 2011. Residents are encouraged to visit the new YRT/Viva website at to view schedules, access online trip planning and experience the new website look and feel.

Highlights of the September changes include additional rush hour Viva purple trips between Richmond Hill Centre Terminal and York University beginning September 6. Frequency between these locations will improve to every 7.5 minutes when combined with regular Viva purple service. Additional midday Viva blue service will also improve travel along Yonge Street starting September 6.

In time for back to school, High School Specials and route diversions to schools will also return September 6. New Route 411 – Markham District via Box Grove School Special will be introduced to offer Box Grove area students direct service to Markham District High School.

On Labour Day, Monday, September 5, Sunday/holiday service will be in effect for all YRT/Viva and TTC routes operating in York Region.

Service changes are being promoted through advertisements in local newspapers, bus stop notices at affected bus stops, information on YRT/Viva vehicles and online. YRT/Viva offers local and rapid transit services throughout all nine municipalities in York Region. More than 120 routes keep residents connected within York Region, as well as with connecting services in the City of Toronto and the Region of Peel. Over 19 million riders used YRT/Viva services in 2010, with an average of 73,000 boardings made each weekday.

YRT/Viva experienced significant ridership gains in the first six months of 2011, reporting a 10.5 per cent increase when compared to the same timeframe in 2010. If this trend continues, YRT/Viva will surpass 21 million riders in 2011.
