April is Oral Health Month

York Region Dental Program expands services for eligible children 17 and under
NEWMARKET – During Oral Health Month and throughout the year, The Regional Municipality of York reminds residents about the importance of good oral health.  Oral health is an important component of overall health.  Untreated dental problems can lead to pain, infection, tooth loss and more serious health issues.
In celebration of Oral Health Month, York Region will open the newly expanded dental clinic space in its Markham Clinic to further enhance services available to the residents of York Region.
Accessing dental care for children can be a challenge for some families, particularly those without dental benefit coverage.  York Region Community and Health Services provides no-cost preventative dental services to eligible residents.
The Healthy Smiles Ontario (HSO) and the Children In Need of Treatment (CINOT) are two               provincially-funded dental programs that cover dental services for eligible children 17 years of age and under.
The Healthy Smiles Ontario no-cost dental program for low-income families covers regular visits to a licensed dental care provider for eligible children.  It covers a full range of dental services including check-ups, cleaning, fillings, x-rays and scaling.
More urgent and essential oral health issues may be covered through the Children in Need of Treatment (CINOT) program.  Services include fillings, extractions and fluoride, while more complex procedures may be covered.  Dental treatment is provided by participating community dental professionals who are reimbursed through the programs.
Eligible children who are identified for urgent and preventative services through elementary school screenings may also access no-cost preventative dental service at one of York Region’s three Public Health dental clinics.  York Region Public Health dental clinics are located at:
