York Region celebrates Healthy Workplace Month

NEWMARKET – In October, The Regional Municipality of York joins fellow Canadians in celebrating Canada’s Healthy Workplace Month.  This year’s theme is “Healthy Mind, Healthy Body, Healthy Work … A Positive Workplace Works!”

According to Health Canada, 15 million Canadians spend more than half of their waking hours at work, making the workplace a perfect place to participate in health-related activities and programs.

During Healthy Workplace Month, leaders, managers, supervisors, labour representatives, wellness coordinators, human resource representatives and employees from workplaces of all sizes across York Region are encouraged to visit www.healthyworkplacemonth.ca  Here you can register to participate in weekly healthy workplace challenges and compete with similar-sized workplaces for a chance to win prizes.  The website also recommends healthy activities throughout the year.

In addition to the many suggestions listed on the Healthy Workplace Month website, there are a few simple tips everyone can embrace to create a healthier lifestyle, including:
• Eating healthy foods
• Participating in daily physical activities
• Taking short breaks throughout the day to relax
• Staying connected with co-workers, friends and family

Healthy Workplace Month provides a great opportunity for workplaces to introduce or enhance a workplace wellness program.  A workplace wellness program can increase the overall health of employees, staff morale, productivity and job satisfaction, as well as enhance corporate competiveness.  A healthy workplace is a great investment.

York Region provides consultative services on starting, implementing and sustaining a workplace wellness program.  Our Workplace Wellness team consists of public health nurses, public health nutritionists, health educators, dental professionals and public health inspectors.  The York Region Workplace Wellness Program was developed to help ensure York Region businesses are easily able to access a variety of public health programs and services.  These programs and services are funded by the Ministry of Health Promotion and Sport and The Regional Municipality of York.
