York Region issues inspection warning to local restaurants

Businesses warned about unauthorized food safety inspections
NEWMARKET – The Regional Municipality of York advises local restaurant owners and food premise operators that unauthorized food safety inspections have recently been offered to restaurants and other eating establishments in the Greater Toronto Area.

The services offered by this company are provided for a fee and are not affiliated with York Region public health inspections.

Business owners and staff are reminded that York Region Public Health Inspectors carry two pieces of identification.  The first is the Regional employee security card which verifies the inspector’s employment with York Region.  The second is the provincial offences officer badge which verifies the inspector’s credentials as a current provincial offences officer in the province of Ontario.

Restaurant owners and food premise operators are reminded that as outlined in the Health Protection and Promotion Act, York Region Public Health Inspectors are mandated to conduct routine unscheduled inspections of all local restaurants and eating establishments.  Inspections that are conducted by the Region are provided at no cost to the establishment.

Restaurants and eating establishments who are approached by this company or have questions about the role of Public Health Inspectors in food and water safety are encouraged to call York Region Health Connection at 1-800-361-5653 or TTY 1-866-252-9933.

York Regional Police are investigating local incidents.  Should you become aware of suspicious activity, please contact York Regional Police at 1-866-876-5423.
