Joint project will improve community through beautification enhancements
NEWMARKET – York Regional Council today approved streetscaping improvements to Gamble Road and 19th Avenue in the Town of Richmond Hill that will create attractive and pedestrian friendly streets through visible landscaping and improved lighting.
“Streetscaping improvements represent investments in our communities,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Bill Fisch. “The streetscaping partnership led by The Regional Municipality of York allows local communities access to funding, which will improve the use and appearance of our streets.”
Improvements to Gamble Road between Bathurst Street and Yonge Street and on 19th Avenue between Yonge Street and Linda Margaret Crescent will include:
• Ledge rock features complemented by plants
• Decorative paving on boulevards
• Decorative street lights
• Lane widening to five lanes from Bathurst Street to Yonge Street
• Lane widening to four lanes from Yonge Street to Linda Margaret Crescent
Future enhancements will also take place at the Yonge Street intersection of Gamble Road as part of the vivaNext initiative.
“Richmond Hill residents and visitors will enjoy a more welcoming neighbourhood as a direct result of these improvements,” said Town of Richmond Hill Mayor David Barrow. “Pedestrian-friendly streets will be created, which will encourage social interaction for residents of our town, our neighbours and visitors.”
York Region allocates $3 million each year to streetscaping initiatives with $1 million of this available for streetscaping improvements in local municipalities. The cost of this project is $345,000.
The Municipal Streetscape Partnership Program was established in 2006 in order to assist municipalities in York Region with funding towards beautification enhancements. Since the program was implemented, the partnership has assisted the City of Vaughan and the Towns of Georgina, East Gwillimbury and Whitchurch-Stouffville.
