NEWMARKET – To kick-off Compost Awareness Week, The Regional Municipality of York is hosting a composting seminar and sale event this Saturday, May 1st from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the York Region Waste Management Centre in the Town of East Gwillimbury.
Residents are invited to visit the Waste Management Centre at 100 Garfield Wright Boulevard to take part in one of three composting seminars hosted by expert Cathy Nesbitt of Cathy's Crawly Composters. Three sessions are available:
• Backyard Composting: 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
• Vermicomposting (composting with worms): 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
• Backyard Composting: 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.
Space is limited so please register in advance by calling 905 895-1200, ext. 5089.
Residents can also purchase a backyard composter for the special price of $10 (cash only) at the event. A limited quantity is available, so get them while they last. Limit two per household. Shredded paper in clear plastic bags can also be dropped off for recycling at the event.
Compost Awareness Week is led by the Composting Council of Canada between Sunday, May 2nd and Saturday, May 8th to raise awareness of the important role of composting in diverting waste from landfill.
Compostable materials make up approximately 40 per cent of household waste. Using a backyard composter and participating in York Region’s Green Bin program greatly reduces the amount of waste sent to landfill. Backyard composting also provides home-made, nutrient-rich material for your gardens.
York Region collected nearly 89,000 tonnes of Green Bin material in 2009.
Thanks to the enthusiastic participation of residents, York Region has been named No. 1 among large urban Ontario municipalities for our diversion rate of 53 per cent in 2008. York Region is committed to achieving a 60 per cent diversion rate by the end of 2010.
