York Region Transit/Viva encourages you to go car-free on Tuesday, September 22nd

Car Free Day pledge form contest available at
NEWMARKET …quot; York Region Transit (YRT)/Viva is encouraging York Region residents to commute smarter to work and school for Car Free Day on Tuesday, September 22nd.
World Car Free Day has been celebrated internationally every September 22nd since its inception in 2000.  Promoted and supported by the World Car Free Network, the goal of Car Free Day is to promote sustainable modes of transportation, including walking, cycling, carpooling and transit use.
To help promote and celebrate Car Free Day, YRT/Viva and our partner Smart Commute are asking people to leave their cars at home and use active transportation, including walking, cycling, rollerblading and public transit to get to where you are going.
In addition to the health and environmental benefits of active transportation and fewer cars on the road, you can have a chance to win a free YRT/Viva monthly pass for October 2009 by signing your name on an online pledge sheet at and volunteering to walk, cycle or use transit.
To help plan for Car Free Day, Smart Commute has some helpful options and advice on carpooling, teleworking, flexible work hours, transit and cycling options for residents and employers.
