Rabies is a viral infection transmitted in the saliva of infected animals.  The virus enters the central nervous system of the host and is almost always fatal once symptoms appear.  A post-exposure vaccine is available for humans in the event of contact with a rabid animal.
All pet owners have a legal requirement to vaccinate dogs and cats over three months of age.  Vaccinating your pet will protect them from acquiring rabies and will also help protect your family if your pet is bitten by a rabid animal.
Residents can have their dogs and cats (over three months of age) vaccinated for $20 each.  For the safety of the pets and pet handlers, all animals must be under control either on a leash or in a pet carrier.
Any pit bull terrier, Staffordshire terrier, American pit bull terries or a dog that has the appearance and physical characteristics similar to these dogs must be muzzled.
