May is Rabies Awareness Month

The Regional Municipality of York and the Town of Newmarket host low-cost rabies clinic
NEWMARKET – May is Rabies Awareness Month and The Regional Municipality of York invites residents to protect their cats and dogs from the rabies virus at an upcoming low-cost vaccination clinic in the Town of Newmarket.
In partnership with the Town of Newmarket, York Region public health is hosting a low-cost rabies clinic on Sunday, May 24th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hollingsworth Arena located at 35 Patterson Drive in the Town of Newmarket.
Rabies is a viral infection transmitted in the saliva of infected animals.  The virus enters the central nervous system of the host and is almost always fatal once symptoms appear.  A post-exposure vaccine is available for humans in the event of contact with a rabid animal.
All pet owners have a legal requirement to vaccinate dogs and cats over three months of age.  Vaccinating your pet will protect them from acquiring rabies and will also help protect your family if your pet is bitten by a rabid animal.
Residents can have their dogs and cats (over three months of age) vaccinated for $15 each.  For the safety of the pets and the pet handlers, all animals must be under control either on a leash or in a pet carrier.
Any pit bull terrier, Staffordshire terrier, American pit bull terrier or a dog that has the appearance and physical characteristics similar to these dogs must be muzzled.
York Region reminds residents that bats can transmit the rabies virus.  Bats are wild animals and as such they should not be approached or touched.  Never try to catch a bat or keep one as a pet.  If you have bats living in your home and want to remove them, it is best to contact a professional pest control company or wildlife removal company.
