YRT/Viva trip planning now available on Google Maps

York Region and Google collaborate on new trip planning option

NEWMARKET The Regional Municipality of York and Google have partnered to bring York Region Transit (YRT)/Viva riders yet another way to plan trips on Google Maps.  This new high-tech trip planner provides YRT/Viva information 24 hours a day, seven days a week, offering high quality mapping and fast results.

"York Region's modern, innovative transit system is powered by state-of-the-art technology," said York Region Chairman and CEO Bill Fisch.  "We will continue to bring riders the latest in technological advancements to make transit information even more accessible."

YRT/Viva riders can access the Google Maps trip planner by visiting www.google.ca/transit and clicking on "York Region."  By simply entering a starting address and destination, riders will receive a trip plan, complete with transfers, walking directions and map.  In the mapping feature, clicking on "satellite" will allow riders to view satellite photos of their travel area, making it easy to pinpoint landmarks and bus stops.

"The easier YRT/Viva becomes to use, the more people will recognize its benefits and get on board," said City of Vaughan Regional Councillor Joyce Frustaglio, Chair of the Region's Transit Committee.  "The Google public transit trip planner is accessible through most handheld devices, bringing information easily to the palm of riders' hands."

YRT/Viva joins the City of Hamilton as the only GTA transit agencies to introduce the public transit feature on Google Maps.  The new Google Maps trip planner complements YRT/Viva's existing trip planner, RideQuest Click, which launched in 2007.

"We are pleased to be working with The Regional Municipality of York to offer YRT/Viva riders additional transit information for their area," said Google Transit Product Specialist Naomi Bilodeau.  "YRT/Viva provides an essential public service and we hope residents and visitors in the area will benefit from this new trip-planning option."

More than 120 routes keep residents connected within York Region, as well as with connecting services in the City of Toronto and the Region of Peel.  More than 19 million riders used YRT/Viva services in 2008, with an average of 75,000 trips made each weekday.
