York Region tobacco prohibition order issued to local vendor

Order states no tobacco sales for six months for Town of Newmarket location
NEWMARKET – The Regional Municipality of York has delivered a notice of prohibition to Coffee Time establishment located at 1090 Ringwell Drive in the Town of Newmarket as a result of non-compliance with the Smoke Free Ontario Act (SFOA).
This Order prohibits the sale of tobacco products for a period of six months, effective December 14th.
The SFOA prohibits the sale or supply of tobacco products to minors under the age of 19 as well as smoking in enclosed workplaces and public places.  It also bans the public display of tobacco products prior to purchase.  As of January 21, 2009, smoking in a motor vehicle carrying children under the age of 16 years old is also prohibited.
York Region Tobacco Control Officers conducted an investigation of this Coffee Time establishment following community complaints of illegal tobacco sales to underage youth.  The vendor was charged and a prohibition order was obtained from the Deputy Minister of Health Promotion.
Tobacco vendors who have two or more convictions within a five-year period are subject to a prohibition order under the SFOA.  This prohibits the vendor from selling or storing tobacco products and bans tobacco wholesalers or distributors from delivering tobacco products to the vendor for the period of time indicated on the order.  All tobacco products must also be removed from the premise.  In accordance with the SFOA regulations, signs indicating the reason for the prohibition must be publicly posted in the store.
"Preventing children and youth from starting to use tobacco products is a key pillar of the Smoke-Free Ontario Strategy (SFOS),” said Dr. Karim Kurji, York Region’s Medical Officer of Health.  “Research has shown that more than 80 per cent of current and former smokers in Canada started smoking before the age of 20.”
The Regional Municipality of York encourages residents to call York Region Health Connection at 1-800-361-5653 to report a tobacco vendor selling tobacco products to underage youth.  All calls are confidential.
