BACKGROUND:
Just completed, Leeder Place, Blue Doors Shelter is a 60-bed emergency facility that provides temporary and
safe relief for families in crisis.

Features of the new building include 15 individual furnished rooms with private four-piece bath, one suite
designated for wheelchair accessibility, homework room, children’s playroom, dining room, lounge, laundry facilities and a children’s outdoor playground.

The facility is also the first emergency shelter in Canada to apply for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.  LEED is an assessment tool used for measuring sustainable building performance and is obtained through the Canada Green Building Council.

Environmental features of this facility include a high percentage of recycled content in building materials and construction waste, energy efficient light fixtures controlled by occupancy sensors, water saving toilets, low-flow faucets, front load washers and green housekeeping practices.

Leeder Place is one of the four emergency shelters York Region currently funds through agreements with
Blue Door Shelters and the Salvation Army of Canada.  In 2006, Housing York Inc. acquired this site to
facilitate the construction of the much needed shelter.
