YRT/Viva gas relief campaign shows it pays to ride transit
NEWMARKET – The Regional Municipality of York has launched a York Region Transit (YRT)/Viva gas relief campaign to highlight the cost-saving benefits of riding public transit.
Based on today’s gas prices, riders can save nearly $10,000 a year by parking the car and riding YRT/Viva. The annual savings are more than the average household pays for food in a year.
“With the high cost of fuel, more commuters are recognizing the benefits of public transit,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Bill Fisch. “YRT/Viva offers a reliable and affordable alternative to driving a car, which benefits both the riders and the environment.”
The YRT/Viva gas relief campaign arrives following a year of financial pain at the pumps for drivers and reminds residents how significant $10,000 a year in savings can be. Gas relief messages will be communicated via newspaper ads, community posters, bus ads and an interactive web page that includes a gas savings calculator at www.yrt.ca/gasrelief
“One of the best ways to beat high gas prices is to reduce our reliance on cars,” said City of Vaughan Regional Councillor Joyce Frustaglio, Chair of the Region’s Transit Committee. “YRT/Viva provides an extensive network of service options within our communities, available at a fraction of the cost of driving.”
The $10,000 annual savings is based on 2008 CAA ownership and driving costs versus the cost of purchasing 12 YRT/Viva adult monthly transit passes. The gas relief campaign will be promoted
YRT/Viva offers local and rapid transit service options throughout all nine municipalities of York Region. Over 80 routes keep residents connected within York Region, as well as with connecting services in the City of Toronto and the Region of Peel. More than 18.2 million riders used YRT/Viva services in 2007, with nearly 73,000 trips made on average each day between Monday and Friday.
