ATU Local 113 members to strike against Veolia Transportation; no Viva service expected Thursday

Union members reject tentative contract agreement from Veolia Transportation Inc.

NEWMARKET The Regional Municipality of York advises residents it is expected that all Viva services will be unavailable beginning 5 a.m. on Thursday, September 25th due to an Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 113 operator strike against Veolia Transportation Inc.

All Viva services will be discontinued for the duration of the strike.

Veolia Transportation Inc. is under contract to The Regional Municipality of York to provide Viva bus rapid transit service.  Veolia operators represented by ATU Local 113 have decided to strike, beginning tomorrow morning, after a tentative contract offer was rejected earlier this evening.

YRT will continue to operate all other services under the current schedules.

YRT/Viva Transit Inspectors and Customer Information Representatives will be available at busy locations throughout York Region to assist customers and provide trip planning guidance.  Additional staff will be on duty at the YRT/Viva Customer Service Centre to assist callers, and hours will be extended as needed throughout the strike period.

Viva provides five bus rapid transit routes along major York Region corridors, including Yonge Street and Highway 7, with links to the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) subway at Don Mills, Finch and Downsview Station.

Approximately 160 Veolia operators and 90 Viva vehicles provide service to 35,000 boardings each weekday.
