All nine local municipalities to participate in Industry Canada initiative
NEWMARKET – The Regional Municipality of York and our nine local municipalities will participate in BizPaL, a Canada-wide online permit and license access system run by Industry Canada in partnership with provincial, territorial, regional and municipal governments.
“BizPaL helps to streamline government processes for our residents and foster new business development,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Bill Fisch. “It enables entrepreneurs to quickly learn what permits and licences are required to operate their businesses so new enterprises can be up and running sooner and more smoothly.”
BizPaL, which is the acronym for Business Permits and Licenses, is an online service that enables entrepreneurs to access permit and licence information from multiple levels of government in one place.
“Entrepreneurs need only to answer a series of questions regarding their business and a list of licences and permits required from each level of government is provided immediately,” said Town of Markham Regional Councillor Tony Wong, Chair of York Region’s Planning and Economic Development Committee. “BizPaL takes the guesswork out of the business permit and licence application process for entrepreneurs and also saves staff time issuing them.”
There are no costs for York Region or the local municipalities associated with the implementation other than staff time for preparing the website and ongoing updating of the information.
BizPaL is a $3-million per year initiative of the Government of Canada to help small and medium-sized business across the country. The Government of Ontario (ServiceOntario) has committed to fund the ongoing operating costs for all Ontario municipalities and regions.
Municipal partners can integrate the BizPaL display screens into their own website, complete with their own look, feel and branding.
All local area municipalities in York Region are working with BizPaL directly to implement their permits and licences. Currently, the initiative is active in all northern six local municipalities that include Aurora, East Gwillimbury, Georgina, King, Newmarket and Whitchurch-Stouffville. Vaughan, Markham and Richmond Hill are in the process of preparing their websites.
