YRT/Viva Bus Roadeo drives up friendly competition

Roadeo champion will represent York Region in the 2009 APTA Bus Roadeo
NEWMARKET – The Regional Municipality of York yesterday held the Inaugural York Region Transit (YRT)/Viva Bus Roadeo.  The event offered YRT/Viva operators the opportunity to showcase their safe driving expertise through a series of skills competitions. 
 
First place Roadeo champion, Teresa Giasson, will move on to represent York Region in the 2009 American Public Transit Association (APTA) Bus Roadeo in Seattle, Washington.
 
“Congratulations to Teresa Giasson,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Bill Fisch.  “YRT/Viva operators provide a vital, skilled service for which they deserve to be recognized.”
 
YRT/Viva operators are trained professionals who bring safe, friendly and reliable transit service to York Region streets.  The Roadeo provided a fun, interactive opportunity for operators to showcase their abilities and receive recognition for their hard work. 
 
“The YRT/Viva Bus Roadeo will become an annual tradition for transit staff in York Region,” said City of Vaughan Regional Councillor Joyce Frustaglio, Chair of the Region’s Transit Committee.  “We look forward to our transit operators being showcased each year locally and internationally.”
 
YRT/Viva service is provided by more than 600 operators employed by four York Region contracted service providers:
• Tokmakjian Inc.
• Miller Transit Ltd.
• First Student Canada
• Veolia Transportation Inc.

YRT/Viva offers local and rapid transit service options throughout all nine municipalities of York Region.  More than 80 routes keep residents connected within York Region, as well as with connecting services in the City of Toronto and the Region of Peel. 
 
More than 18.2 million riders used YRT/Viva services in 2007, with nearly 73,000 trips made on average each day between Monday and Friday.  Nearly 400 vehicles will make up the YRT/Viva fleet in 2008, including five diesel-electric hybrid vehicles.  All 90 Viva vehicles will be powered with a bio-diesel fuel blend in 2008.
