Directory of 26,800 businesses useful for doing business across York Region
NEWMARKET – York Regional Council has released the 2008 York Region Business Directory, a listing of approximately 26,800 businesses within The Regional Municipality of York.
"The 2008 York Region Business Directory provides businesses and area residents with up-to-date business address and contact information," said York Region Chairman and CEO Bill Fisch. "The Directory promotes local businesses, supports a range of business and consumer activities and showcases the diverse nature of York Region's economy."
The Directory supports business activities such as marketing and the sourcing of local trades and suppliers. It also assists residents when conducting job searches and locating specific products and services within York Region.
"The public response has been positive and the online Directory averaged more than 1,900 inquiries per month so far in 2008," said Town of Markham Regional Councillor Tony Wong, Chair of York Region's Planning and Economic Development Committee. "From a business owner's perspective, the Business Directory is a good source of free advertising."
The Directory provides basic economic data about York Region. Following are some examples:
• York Region has an estimated 29,500 businesses and 490,000 jobs.
• In terms of employment by industry, the three largest industry sectors were manufacturing, business services and personal services.
• Recent employment growth in a number of industry sectors has contributed to the diversification of an already broad-based economy. This diversification helps to insulate our economy from sectoral shifts in the business cycle.
• Approximately 80 per cent of employment is full time.
The 2008 York Region Business Directory is based on information collected from the 2008 York Region Employment Survey, a door-to-door survey conducted between May and August, 2008. The annual employment survey also provides a large part of the background data for the annual York Region Employment & Industry Report.
Each business record contains the following information: business name, address, municipality, postal code, phone number, number of employees and location map. Each business is sorted according to the main industry sector, as defined by the North American Industrial Classification system.
The database contains information on approximately 26,800 of the Region's estimated 29,500 local businesses. About 2,700 businesses either did not respond to the survey or are home or farm-based businesses.
The 2008 York Region Business Directory is available on CD-ROM or online through the York Region website.
The online directory enables residents to search the data using a combination of criteria, including company name, product or service, city or town, postal code, industry classification and number of employees.
