York Region wins awards for leading-edge diversion campaigns

Successful campaigns promote diversion of Household Hazardous Waste and reusable items

NEWMARKET – The Regional Municipality of York continues to achieve diversion increases while receiving awards for leading-edge diversion education campaigns.

York Region’s 2006 Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) and Reuse/Dropoff campaigns took home two awards this month, recognizing the successful programs that increased safe disposal of HHW and diverted roughly 11 tonnes of reusable items from landfill last year.  The awards are on the heels of York Region reporting an incredible 65 per cent diversion rate achieved in the last two weeks of September.

“York Region provides a number of waste management programs and services, including depots throughout the region for the dropoff and safe handling of Household Hazardous Waste,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Bill Fisch.  “We encourage residents to use these available services and continue to contribute to our efforts toward diversion and environmental protection.”

Last year’s HHW campaign, urging residents to keep hazardous waste out of the garbage and away from the drain, won the Silver Award for Promotion from the Recycling Council of Ontario (RCO). The successful campaign helped increase traffic of York Region residents to visit HHW Depots last year by 22 per cent.

The Reuse/Dropoff campaign, encouraging the sharing and reusing of community goods in partnership with Goodwill and Habitat for Humanity, was also awarded an RCO Silver Award in the Waste Reduction Week Participation category. The one-day event held during Waste Reduction Week diverted roughly 11 tonnes of reusable goods away from landfill and back into the community.

“York Region’s diversion programs are making all of us think twice before putting anything in the garbage,” said City of Vaughan Regional Councillor Mario Ferri, Chair of the Region’s Solid Waste Committee.  “We all stand to benefit from reusing as much as we can and getting Household Hazardous Waste to the right place.”

York Region offers four depots where residents can safely dispose of HHW at no cost:
