BACKGROUND:

York Region has partnered with Durham Region on the Durham/York Residual Waste Environmental Assessment Study to find a way to manage the garbage remaining after diversion efforts, such as re-using, recycling and composting.

York Regional Council is dedicated to increasing waste diversion and last fall committed to diverting 65 per cent of waste from landfill by 2010.

The consulting team will present a final report containing the results of the public consultations to the Joint Waste Management Group on Tuesday, November 27th.  Durham and York Regional Councils are expected to make a decision on accepting the consultant team's final recommended preferred site in December.
