YRT\Viva to launch Go Green Ride Blue campaign

Residents encouraged to try transit once to celebrate Clean Air Day on June 6th

NEWMARKET – York Region Transit (YRT) \ Viva are launching a Go Green Ride Blue campaign next week in celebration of Clean Air Day on Wednesday, June 6th.  The campaign will applaud those individuals already taking public transit on a regular basis as well as encourage more York Region residents to make a clean air commitment by trying transit.

"York Region is committed to the environment and proud to invest in and operate public transit services, such as YRT\Viva,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Bill Fisch.  "These crucial initiatives strive to decrease the congestion on our roads and to improve the quality of the air we breathe."

“YRT/Viva’s Go Green Ride Blue campaign is important because it increases awareness among all residents that each one of us is responsible for our actions and can make a difference to the environment,” said Town of Markham Regional Councillor Jim Jones, Chair of the Region’s Transit Committee.  “The campaign will also reward and recognize residents who are already making healthy choices by taking transit.”

Earlier this week, YRT\Viva staff began handing out buttons with the phrase “I’m green. I ride” to transit riders at terminals across the Region.  From June 4th to 8th, transit riders are asked to demonstrate their clean air commitment by wearing their buttons and in turn, they will have a chance to win a monthly transit pass.  Interested individuals can also obtain buttons at municipal offices, by visiting YRT’s head office, located at 50 High Tech Road in the Town of Richmond Hill, or by contacting 1-866-668-3978 to arrange for a button to be mailed.

Riders can also win free prizes, including an iPOD™ by trying transit throughout the week and visiting www.yrt.ca/blueisgreen to log the trip they took.

York Region encourages all residents to make a difference next week in celebration of Clean Air Day – take transit, ride a bike or carpool with a friend – every small action can make a difference.

York Region operates two public transit services, the conventional YRT service and the Viva Rapid Transit service, launched in September 2005.  YRT also operates the door-to-door Mobility Plus service for individuals with disabilities.
