YRT and Viva ridership up more than 12 per cent compared to 3 per cent national average
NEWMARKET – The Regional Municipality of York’s transit ridership continues to grow at an impressive pace, according to statistics published by the Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA). In 2006, York Region Transit (YRT) and Viva Rapid Transit posted an increase of 12.39 per cent over the previous year, compared to the national average of 3.21 per cent.
“The continued strong growth in York Region’s transit ridership is very encouraging and shows that our ongoing investment in transit and rapid transit infrastructure is paying off,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Bill Fisch. “As our communities grow, continued transit growth will become increasingly important to help move people and goods across our busy road network.”
In 2006, more than 17 million passengers rode YRT/Viva, an increase of 1.8 million riders when compared to 2005 figures. This increase is equivalent to an additional 3,500 residents taking YRT/Viva to and from work each day for the year.
“In total, ridership growth at Canadian transit systems has amounted to about 26 per cent since 1996,” said Michael Roschlau, CUTA President and CEO. “What these figures show is that this trend remained strong in 2006, and York Region Transit was instrumental in bringing this about.”
Part of York Region’s transit success can be attributed to numerous system enhancements in 2006, including:
• The introduction of an additional 260,000 service hours
• 8 new buses added to our fleet and 6 buses replaced
• 210 upgrades to bus stops
• Enhanced accessibility for users
York Region operates two public transit services, the conventional YRT service and Viva Rapid Transit, launched in September 2005. YRT also operates the door-to-door Mobility Plus service for individuals with disabilities. Since the formation of YRT in 2001, York Region has enjoyed ridership increases of 10 per cent or more in each year of its operation.
