York Region launches Household Hazardous Waste campaign

Promotional campaign strengthened by private sector partnership
NEWMARKET – The Regional Municipality of York is partnering with a number of local paint stores, real estate agencies and the York Region Welcome Wagon to help raise awareness of the dangers that surround improper disposal of Household Hazardous Waste.

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) includes many common household products that homeowners use on a regular basis, including all-purpose cleaners, bleach, alkyd and lead-based paints, nail polish and remover, pesticides, pool chemicals, motor oil, rodent killer and mothballs.

“York Region is pleased to be working with our community partners to promote the safe disposal of hazardous household waste for our residents,” said Regional Chair and CEO Bill Fisch.  “We want people to realize there is a right way to dispose of harmful substances and provide them with the knowledge to assist them in doing so.”

Storing old chemicals in homes exposes families to unnecessary risk of fire, air quality problems and risk of accidental poisoning of children and pets.

To increase awareness about the proper disposal of leftover chemicals, participating paint stores will be placing information tags on the handle of each can of paint sold during the month of May and participating real estate agencies and the York Region Welcome Wagon will be distributing information brochures.

“It is important for all of us to know how to dispose properly of household hazardous waste because all of us come into contact with these substances everyday, especially during spring clean up and yard maintenance,” said City of Vaughan Regional Councillor Mario Ferri, Chair of the Region’s Solid Waste Committee.  “This campaign is a great way to educate residents about their options concerning household hazardous waste, encouraging safety and the well-being of our families and the environment.”

The Region operates several HHW depots where residents can safely dispose of their chemicals at no cost.
