York Region Transit launches 6 Years and 60 Million Riders promotional contest

YRT and Viva ask commuters to submit their best transit stories

NEWMARKET – To celebrate the 60 millionth rider on York Region Transit (YRT) and Viva, the Regional Municipality of York is encouraging riders to submit their best transit experience as part of a promotional contest that will see the winners receive free transit for a year and other great prizes.

“This contest is a great way to recognize the tremendous success of York Region Transit and Viva Rapid Transit,” said York Regional Chair and CEO Bill Fisch.  “With the groundswell of support our transit system has received since 2001, this is an excellent opportunity for our commuters to relay to us some of their personal stories regarding York Region Transit and Viva.”

The contest is divided into four categories: Youth, Teen, Adult and Mobility Plus riders.

Entrants are asked – in 300 words or less – to say why YRT and Viva are important to you and your community, or what you’ve experienced since becoming a transit rider.

“This promotion helps put a personal perspective on our transit successes,” said King Township Mayor Margaret Black, Chair of the Region’s Transit Committee.  “It is always refreshing to hear from our riders, whose ongoing support for YRT and Viva continue to make our transit system a model for other communities.”

The following prizes will be awarded for the four categories:

Youth (13 and under)

1 Year FREE YRT/Viva Travel + $250 Mall gift certificate

Teen (14-18)

1 Year FREE YRT/Viva Travel + Apple iPod nano

Adult (19 and older)

1 Year FREE YRT/Viva Travel + Flat screen 27 inch TV

Mobility Plus rider

1 Year FREE YRT/Viva Travel + $250 Mall gift certificate

Contest entries will be accepted until May 29, 2006.

All submissions will be judged on originality and impact by an internal selection committee.  Winners will be recognized and awarded prizes during a special ceremony on June 12th at the Richmond Hill Centre Terminal.

Entrants must read the full contest rules and regulations on the YRT Web site at www.yrt.ca/contests before submitting their story via the online entry form.  Entrants can also access contest information through the 6 Year and 60 Million Riders link on the front page of the York Region Web site, www.york.ca
