NEWMARKET – The Regional Municipality of York is the recent recipient of three awards in recognition of outstanding products in environmental planning, geospatial infrastructure and Web-based geomatics services.
On behalf of the Region, Planning and Development Services Commissioner Bryan Tuckey accepted the "2006 Award for Planning Excellence - Environmental Planning" from the Canadian Institute of Planners for York Region's 2005 State of the Environment Report, at the World Planners Congress this month in Vancouver.
A collaborative effort between the Planning and Development Services and Health and Emergency Medical Services departments along with a multitude of stakeholders, the 2005 State of the Environment Report describes how York Region and our partners responded to 24 recommendations from the 2000 State of the Environment Report and highlights the numerous environmental initiatives implemented in the Region since that time.
The report uses a suite of 85 indicators to report on the current state of the environment and trends which will continue to be monitored and reported on in five years.
Also on behalf of the Region, Director of York Region's Geomatics Branch Nancy Prout accepted Silver awards for "Best Municipal GIS Challenge" and "Best Web GIS Challenge" from the Ontario Chapter of the Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (URISA) at the URISA Ontario 2006 Be Spatial Conference in May.
These awards recognize the substantial progress York Region has made in creating a robust and reliable geospatial infrastructure for Regional mapping services. Regional Council congratulated staff from the Geomatics Branch in the Planning and Development Services Department for enhancing customer service through the quality of the products they created.
The York Region internet mapping site ensures that the Region's geographic data holdings and products are accessible to users throughout York Region, including the public sector, businesses and residents, and thereby helps strengthen the local economy, improve education in York Region's schools and assist decision-making.
