YRT service in Markham, Whitchurch-Stouffville and Richmond Hill may be affected if contract negotiations unsuccessful

Labour dispute between Miller Transit Ltd. and Amalgamated Transit Union
NEWMARKET – Some York Region Transit (YRT) routes in the Town of Markham, the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville and the Town of Richmond Hill may be affected if labour negotiations between Miller Transit Ltd. and members of the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) do not result in a new contract.
Miller Transit is one of four private companies that provide conventional and rapid transit operations and maintenance contracts for YRT and Viva.  A contract vote is scheduled for tomorrow.  If the contract offer is not accepted, YRT service disruption may occur following 48 hours notice.
The contract with Miller Transit includes 46 routes – 24 routes operating in Markham and Whitchurch-Stouffville and 22 routes in Richmond Hill.  The contract involves 138 YRT buses and 220 contracted bus operators, which carries nearly 16,000 riders of YRT’s 55,000 daily weekday passengers.
Transit routes not affected by this potential labour dispute include:
• All 23 YRT routes in Newmarket, Aurora, King Township, East Gwillimbury and Georgina operated by Laidlaw Transit Ltd.
• All 20 YRT routes in Vaughan operated by Canar / Tokmakjian Inc.
• All five Viva Rapid Transit service routes operated by Connex Canada LT
• All YRT Mobility Plus transit service
• All 12 TTC routes operating in York Region
York Region remains optimistic that Miller Transit and the ATU can reach a contract agreement and maintain full transit service on YRT routes in Markham, Whitchurch-Stouffville and Richmond Hill.
