Significant infrastructure issues cited in revised construction timeline
NEWMARKET – The Regional Municipality of York and the City of Vaughan have determined that adverse groundwater conditions are the cause of a broken sewer and watermain on the northwest corner of Highway 7 and Jane Street in the City of Vaughan.
To accommodate the extensive infrastructure replacement, the intersection will remain closed until the week of March 20th. York Region is currently working on restoring partial access to Highway 7 eastbound via Maplecrete Road.
The intersection of Jane Street and Highway 7 was closed by York Regional Police on February 7th due to a significant pavement failure. The intersection has remained closed to vehicles with the exception of local traffic.
Estimates taken by City of Vaughan survey crews suggest the local sanitary sewer has dropped as much as 1.3 metres. The local watermain has shifted significantly, possibly affecting the pipe’s integrity.
Sewage is currently being re-directed away from the affected area and water has been shut off. A temporary water supply has been supplied to businesses on the northwest corner of the intersection. Survey crews continue to monitor the site to determine if further ground settlement is taking place around the affected area.
Work at the Regional intersection continues around the clock. Due to high groundwater levels in the area, arrangements are being made to drill a series of wells to remove groundwater for construction to commence.
Viva Rapid Transit remains unaffected by the closure; however delays may occur due to the intersection closure. York Region Transit (YRT) will continue to detour its two local bus routes – YRT Route 77 and TTC Route 35D – to maintain service to the area.
