Bill Fisch acclaimed to fourth term as York Regional Chair

NEWMARKET – Bill Fisch has been acclaimed to his fourth term as York Regional Chair and CEO this evening at the Inaugural York Regional Council meeting for the November 2006-December 2010 term of office.
Bill Fisch’s nomination was brought forward by Town of Georgina Regional Councillor Danny Wheeler and was seconded by Town of Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti.  The motion was unanimously approved by all nine Mayors and 11 Regional Councillors representing the nine area municipalities of York Region.
“To members of Regional Council, I appreciate the faith and trust you have placed in me for the next four years.  To the residents of this great Region, I welcome the opportunity that comes with the responsibility of being your Regional Chairman,” said Regional Chair Bill Fisch during his Inaugural Address.
During his Address to more than 350 people in the York Regional Council Chambers, Chair Fisch described York Region as a fantastic community of communities, a strong, safe and caring community with an exciting future ahead.
“Today, we are a $1.6 billion dollar corporation.  We incorporate sound policies, search out innovative techniques and conduct long-range planning in everything we do. These represent hallmarks of good management; hallmarks of good government.  Regional Council’s role is to ensure the growth in York Region is appropriate, well timed and our services are available for both new and existing residents.  Our role is also to ensure we are provided with the appropriate funding requirement to accommodate provincial growth estimates greater than our own projections.”
“The Region’s pledge to environmental protection is unwavering,” added Chairman Fisch.  “Every day, our Region delivers safe and clean drinking water and safely treats our wastewater.  Both new and existing infrastructure is held and scrutinized to the highest level of environmental protection imaginable.  The extra financial resources this Council commits to environmental management is a testament to our environmental resolve.”
In closing, Chair Fisch emphasized the need for team work. “Yes, we will have difference of opinions.  But consensus building will win the day.”
The 20 newly elected members of Council attended the Inaugural Council meeting and were sworn into office.
The first regular business meeting of York Regional Council for the 2006-2010 term will take place on Thursday, December 14th at 9:30 a.m. in Council Chambers of the York Region Administrative Centre.
