Accurate census information is essential for York Region’s program delivery
NEWMARKET – The Regional Municipality of York has adopted Statistics Canada’s slogan “Count yourself in” and is using it to encourage every household in York Region to fill out its 2006 Census information on May 16th.
“Accurate Census information is of great value to York Region and our nine area municipalities,” said Regional Chair and CEO Bill Fisch. “By ensuring everyone gets counted, we can better tailor programs and services for all York Region residents.”
Statistics Canada will be mailing the 2006 Census forms to households beginning the first week of May in urban areas. For the first time, Canadians can complete their Census forms online or by mail. This differs from previous years where Census enumerators went to every door.
York Region has a large recent immigrant population who speak neither English nor French and may not be aware that participating in the Census, which is undertaken once every five years, is required by law and is entirely confidential.
York Region is working in partnership with Statistics Canada to promote the Census within York Region. Statistics Canada is reaching out to new Canadians across the GTA and York Region via advertising in the ethnic media.
For its part, York Region wants to ensure that all residents are aware of the need to participate in the Census. The Region will place ads that feature brief messages in the top 10 non-official languages used in York Region: Italian, Chinese, Russian, Persian, Punjabi, Greek, German, Spanish, Tagalog and Tamil. The goal is to help ensure that no residents inadvertently discard their Census forms, which would impact negatively on data quality.
Statistics Canada is providing assistance in more than 40 languages at their Census helpline at:
1-877-594-2006. Translations of the Census questions are available in 62 languages on the Census Web site. For more information, please visit: www.census2006.ca
In 2001, 729,000 people in 223,200 households were counted. In the 2001 Census it is estimated that four per cent of York Region’s population, or nearly 30,000 people, were missed in the count, which amounts to the population of a small city.
Since 2001, York Region has grown by about 36,000 people per year. Currently, approximately 274,000 households across York Region are required to respond to the Census. The Region’s estimated population is 925,350.
The Census provides the most accurate base information for the Region’s long term population and employment forecast needs, which play an important role in planning for infrastructure projects, housing needs, land requirements and various health and social programs.
