Security cameras to be installed in transit terminals and on YRT and Viva buses

Installation part of an overall effort to increase rider safety

NEWMARKET – The Regional Municipality of York will be installing security cameras in transit buses and stations as part of an effort to ensure public safety for both passengers and transit staff.

“The security of our transit passengers and staff is of paramount importance,” said York Regional Chair and CEO Bill Fisch.  “The installation of security cameras in key areas of our transit operations will be very advantageous, both in terms of deterring criminal activity and increasing response time to a variety of situations.”

York Regional Council today approved a Request for Proposals (RFP) to assess the types of surveillance technologies available.  Depending on the technology selected, costs could be between $5,000 and $8,000 per camera.  Cameras will be installed at the Promenade Terminal, Bernard Terminal and Richmond Hill Centre later this year.

“The installation of security cameras provides our riders added peace of mind, knowing that the Region has an improved capability to respond to potential problems on our transit system,” said King Township Mayor Margaret Black, Chair of the Region’s Transit Committee.  “In addition to the safety features offered by these cameras, we also have an opportunity to optimize the performance of our transit system and monitor Proof-of-Payment program on our Viva buses.”

While there have been a minimal number of incidents to date, YRT will install cameras on all of its buses as an added level of security to passengers and drivers.
