When do I need to be screened for cancer

April is National Cancer Awareness Month

NEWMARKET –   In recognition of National Cancer Awareness Month, the Cancer Prevention Network of York Region (CPNYR) is pleased to announce that “Cancer Screening Saves Lives” personal tracking cards are now available to York Region residents at screening centres and physician’s offices across York Region.

The wallet-size cards contain cancer screening guidelines, a chart to help identify and track screening tests and space for individuals to keep important numbers (doctor, screening sites, etc.) easily accessible.

The goal of this new and free card is to remind York Region residents to be screened regularly for breast, cervical, colorectal and prostate cancer.  Below are some cancer screening statistics to remind residents why screening is important:

• Only 24 per cent of all Ontario women, who are eligible for the breast cancer screening tests (mammograms), are being screened through the Ontario Breast Screening Program (Ontario Breast Screening Program, 2005)
• 22 per cent of women in York Region have not been screened for cervical cancer in the last three years (The Regional Municipality of York, 2002).  Cervical cancer is over 90 per cent preventable through regular pap tests
• Provincial colorectal cancer screening test participation is only 8 per cent, (Cancer Care Ontario, 2005) despite the fact that colorectal cancer is 90 per cent preventable and curable if it is detected and treated early enough
• Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men and 8,300 Ontario men were diagnosed with this disease in 2005 (Canadian Cancer Statistics, 2005)

CPNYR is a partnership of the Canadian Cancer Society, Ontario Breast Screening Program, Toronto Sunnybrook Regional Cancer Centre, York Region Health Services and the Centre for Information and Community Services of Ontario.
